A Polish Christmas Tradition: Sharing of the Oplatek

Remarks by Trish Del Busse, PFA National First Vice President

Ordinarily, we would walk around, share the Oplatek, hug, kiss and offer each other a very Merry Christmas and good wishes for the New Year. This year is quite different and very challenging in so many ways. But we are still gathering (even though virtually) and it is still the most wonderful time of the year!

I would like to offer a few reminders from books and movies:

  • The true spirit of Christmas lies in our hearts!
  • Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we cannot see!
  • The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!
  • Christmas isn’t just a day; it is a frame of mind!

Christmas gift suggestions:

  • To your enemy, forgiveness.
  • An opponent, tolerance.
  • To your friend, your heart.
  • A customer, service.
  • To all, charity.
  • To every child, a good example.
  • To yourself, respect.

Jesus is the reason, Christmas is the Birthday of our Lord.

And so, this Christmas season may our hearts with gladness glow, as we remember the blessed story that took place so long ago. This is Christmas: not the tinsel, not the giving and receiving, not even the carols, but the humble heart that receives anew the wondrous gift, the Christ child. Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide-open heart that thinks of others first.

John and I along with our family Wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, Wesolych Swiat!

I usually wish a Happy, Healthy New Year, but this year, I will also add out with the old and in with the new!

Hopefully, 2021 will bring us much optimism, joy and prosperity. Instead of wishing for an extraordinary 2021, let’s pray for a somewhat ordinary 2021!

VP Trish: 2020 Convention

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

As I sit here finishing up my four-year report, I think of our upcoming Virtual Convention. The reality of this is, is that we don’t have a choice. The PA Insurance Department insisted that we have a Convention and take care of the business that must be handled this year.

There are a couple advantages to a Virtual Convention. Well, maybe one – no travel!

The camaraderie will have to wait until next year. The social gatherings, the Falconette Luncheon, the Legion of Honor Conclave and meeting, hospitality rooms, interactions, auctions, sight-seeing and fun! There is no doubt that Members of Nest 88, New Britain, Conn. will be fabulous hosts.

One of the things that I am disappointed in is that I do not get to present my PowerPoint and explain what I have been doing the last four years as your National First Vice President. I like to put up photos, explain who, what and where and I also like to acknowledge Members. Included in this blog are a few photos of events from the past couple of years; obviously, I am not able to explain everything.

I am hoping that all of our Delegates take the time to read our reports ahead of time. Each Delegate will receive a binder prior to the Convention which will contain reports and other information needed for the Convention.

Hopefully, all of the Nests have elected their Delegates. The deadline for National Headquarters to receive the mandate forms is October 20. Please visit polishfalcons.org/national-convention. The form is fillable, fill it out, save it, then attach it as an email and send to convention2020@polishfalcons.org. Again, deadline is October 20. Once we receive your forms, we need to verify membership and dues.

Looking forward to our Convention on Saturday, November 21.

Fraternal Information

In order for an organization to be considered a fraternal, the organization must have a lodge system. This is why the Polish Falcons of America has Nests and why each Member must belong to a Nest. The Polish Falcons of America is a 501 (C) 8 non-profit.

Fraternals were formed with a common cause in mind; the PFA is obviously ethnic-based. We do now permit those who are not Polish but have a genuine interest in the Polish culture and traditions.

Keep safe! Wash those hands!

A Note Regarding Awards Presentations

By | News | No Comments

Czolem Druhny i Druhowie!

I received an inquiry regarding Legion of Honor awards for 2020. Due to the fact that everything has been postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Nests will not be having award banquets or presentations this year. One of the questions was; can a Nest apply for awards but not present until next year at their 2021 awards presentations? In essence they would be presenting two years of awards at one time.

After my discussion with First Vice President Patricia Del Busse, we agreed on the following resolution regarding the Legion of Honor awards for 2020.

  1. Nests should submit award applications for qualified individuals this year.
  2. Awards can be presented at any time a Nest chooses to do so once the applications are reviewed and approved. There is no need to wait for a banquet or other event, it can be done during meetings or other Nest events.
  3. If an award cannot be presented this year because it is only done during a Nest banquet, then it can be presented at next year’s banquet. It should be done in this order; the 2020 awards first and then the 2021 awards.
  4. Banquets should NOT be the deciding event on when awards can be presented.
  5. Anyone that deserves an LOH award this year should be awarded regardless of when they will receive it.
  6. National Headquarters will dispense all approved awards to the Nests via U.S. Postal Service.

Please let us know if this clarifies the issue or if anyone has other questions. You can contact me by email at cieslaed@rcn.com, or Druhna Del Busse at vptrish@polishfalcons.org.

Thank you!
