In addition to the $200.00 Nest contribution the team raised an additional $4300.00. This not only was genuine demonstration of the community connection but also the fraternal connection of Nest 485 Falcons. The total amount raised from the walk was $300,000.00.
Nest 485 Loses a Friend
By Druhna Ann Malachowski
Through the years many changes have taken place with Nest 485, Chelsea, Massechusetts. Many of the past deceased Nest’s leaders have helped it evolve through the years. Charles Mac Farlane was one of them. Charles MacFarlane passed away late August, 2008 after a brief illness and is still missed and remembered by all who knew him.
Charlie, as everyone knew him, was the constant part of Nest 485 for the past three decdes. He was proud to be part of the Falcons. He served as Nest President as well as President of former District X. Charlie was the man behind the scenes, whether it was getting the club ready or cleaning up after a function, overseeing the daily operations, waiting for deliveries or mowing the Nest’s backyard.
Whether it was a banquet, picnic, polka dance, church bazaar, or a holiday party, Charlie was there making sure that members and guests were enjoying themselves. He always made arrangements for the District’s children to attend summer camp, often driving them himself. He was active with the bowling team and attended the National Bowling Tournament many times. Charlie also represented the Nest and District X at several National Conventions. One of his favorite recollections was when he attended his first National Honor meeting, proudly wearing his Bronze Medal. Although Charlie was not of Polish heritage, he embraced and enjoyed being part of Polonia by representing the Falcons at local and state functions.
Charlie was also an icon of his beloved City of Chelsea. He was an avid historian of the city and had a vast collection of historic postcards and photos. Charlie served for several terms as Ward 2 Alderman, active with ROCA, Harbormaster, Park Commissioner, and many other civic committees. He was Chelsea’s official “Santa” for many years. There are countless families from Chelsea and Nest 485 who had Charlie come to visit their homes and Vigilias as Santa. The City of Chelsea awarded Charles Mac Farlane “Senior of the Year 2008” posthumously for his service to the City.
Charlie gave so much of himself but perhaps the greatest gift he gave us was his smile and a warm sincere hello when you met him outside the club quarters wearing one of his cowboy hats.
